Happy New Year Everyone!
Our Christmas certainly was not boring. On Christmas Eve Rebekah was due to have a new gripper put into her port, this is done weekly, hardly ever with any problems. When it was done this day Rebekah complained of stinging pain once the nurse started to put in the meds so she stopped immediately . She decided to put in another gripper in case it was not in properly or something was wrong with the gripper itself. This time Rebekah said it was stinging even to have the saline solution put in, this is not normal. The nurse decided we should go over to the emergency department and see what they could do from there. We spend 5 hours there from 6-11. They tried it there too with the same results. The doctor said he was going to put in a peripheral line( a regular IV) and then he was going to get the surgeon that was on for Christmas day to order a line o gram(a special dye test) that would show if there was a possible crack in the port. He told us we would probably have the test done on boxing day or the next, and in the mean time she could recieve her meds through the regular IV. Well 2 days tuned into over a week, still no call. I called the x-ray department to see what was going on. They did not call me back for days. I decided to call her surgeon in Truro to ask him what we should do, the secretary said we should come see him. We went yesterday and he tried using the port and Rebekah had not pain. He is not sure what is going on, but agrees she needs the line o gram done. When I got back to the valley I called the x-ray dept again. They searched for a referral and could not find one. The clerk told me she would go down the Emergency pull her file and see what was going on. Well we get a call today and she said the referral was still in her file, it was never send to x-ray. The clerk said this is just not right, this test should have been done weeks ago, and she was going to file a formal complaint about this, I agreed. So tomorrow she will have the dye test done to see if there is a possible crack in the port. If there is she will have to have it taken out and a new one inserted. If there is none the nurses will try doing the treatments again through the port, hopefully with no trouble. The surgeon said that if she has pain again and it continues, then he will still have to do the surgery. We are hoping this will not have to happen, as we don't want to put her through another surgery . Rebekah is still continuing to improve, but is still not well enough to stop treatment yet. We will update you soon on what the dye test reveals.
